Detroiters reject Trump and show exactly what the city is made of

Detroiters reject Trump and show exactly what the city is made of

Give Detroiters credit for one thing: We’re getting smarter about seeing sheep in wolves’ clothing. For years, this city has been a punchline for its election habits, notoriously re-electing now-imprisoned Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to a second term despite an ongoing investigation into the crimes he now serves time for. Other elected officials are often chosen for their surname recognition rather than political savvy, and public meetings in the past have been peppered with outbursts of gospel singing, threats of violence and other miscellaneous hyperbole. But this Labor Day weekend, our smarts kicked back in. Donald Trump came to town, and – save for the protesters showing up wherever he wanted to go – he was ignored. As well he should be. We’re seeing more and more electric vehicles – EVs for short – on our roads as automakers expand greener offerings and make them more affordable for drivers. There are some key differences, though. For one, EVs aren’t hybrids. Hybrids are powered by both a gasoline engine and an electric motor, and never have to be plugged in. EVs are all-electric, and can be charged by home-charging stations (installed in your home) or simply a standard plug that just takes longer to charge.  The other thing to know is your own commute. “It depends on how far you drive and in what conditions,” says Sam Abuelsamid, a senior...

Detroit’s Distinguished Doughnuts

Detroit’s Distinguished Doughnuts

What is it about doughnuts that we just can’t resist? We know, we know – they’ll spoil your lunch. (Or your thighs.) You just had one the other day. It’s not cheat day yet. If you eat one, you’ll probably eat another. All the excuses, and yet, you know you’ll still have one. So you might as well shake it up a bit. We hit up some of our favorite doughnut shops across metro Detroit and picked up a few tasty treats you should definitely sink your teeth into. Dilla's Delight's Named in honor of his legendary nephew, Herman “Uncle Herm” Hayes pays tribute to J Dilla with other one-of-a-kind Detroit creations at Dilla’s Delights, including the “Aaliyah,” a lemon-zest doughnut, and the Conant Garden Glaze, a homage...
