Congressman Keith Ellison in Detroit for Book Tour, Discussion

What does it mean to be an American today?

Detroit native Keith Ellison talks Americanism and more in his book, My Country,'Tis of Thee: My Faith, My Family, Our Future ($25, Gallery Books/Karen Hunter Publishing) and will visit the Motor City on March 16, 2014 at the Church of the New Covenant Baptist on his book tour.

Ellison, a Wayne State University alumnus, is a U.S. representative for Minnesota's 5th Congressional District and is the state's first non-white congressman ever elected. He is also the first Muslim elected to Congress.

The book details his life as a Black Muslim in American politics and supports his belief in the separation of church and state in the U.S.

Ellison also uses the book to discuss what he views as our nation's "potential."

"We are in a battle for our national soul. As America marches into this new era, we must decide who we are and what we stand for," Ellison writes in the book's epilogue. "We have to look in our individual mirrors and determine whether we will embrace the words written in our Constitution, such as 'We the People' and 'to form a more perfect union,' or whether we want to toss it all away for selfish goals and ambitions."

Ellison takes on other big issues such as health care, troubles with Congress, and civil rights in the book.
