KEM's 'If It's Love' – Which Version is Better?

Is Detroit's own Maurissa Rose's duet with KEM better than the mainstream release featuring Chrisette Michele? You tell us!

Motown musicman KEM has two versions of his hit song "If It's Love." One was recorded with local unsigned artist Maurissa Rose, who was featured in the cover story in the April issue of BLAC Detroit. The other widespread release of the song features mainstream artist Chrisette Michele. Which version do you think is tops?

Does local girl Maurissa Rose got it going on or is her take all wrong? Does Chrisette Michele have crystal pipes or is her version just plain ripe? You tell us. Comment below with the name of the lady who you think had the best "kemistry" with KEM.

Maurissa's voice is more dynamic and gave the song a more soulful quality which I like better. Chrisette either was holding back or she doesn't possess the range of Maurissa. I think Kem may have wanted her to hold back to give the song a more smooth jazz feel or come closer to his laid back style. He may have feared that Maurissa outshined him on his own song. Its time for Maurissa to move from the background to the limelight and let the world hear her talent.

I really enjoy the "If this is love" version with Maurissa Rose, with her version it took the song over the top...That is just my opinion, she has a smooth, soulful, savy voice. That song was my ringtone and caller tune on my cell phone...

OMG! I have been waiting on this. I wrote the local stations to ask why they would even play the Chrisette version seeing that we had local talent on that song and we should be supporting her, of course they claim they play what there told. Not a good answer but that's what I got.

Anyway, Maurissa has completed two awesome songs with Kem and I'm not sure why he thought he should cut a second version with Chrisette on this last song, but it was a BIG mistake. Maurissa's makes this song, period.

MAURISSA ROSE IS AWESOME! SHE IS TRULY SELLING THAT SONG. SHE'S BAD! AIN'T NO OTHER WAY TO PUT IT! THE GIRL CAN SANG!!!!! AND REPLACING MAURISSA WITH CHRISETTE SHOULDN'T NEVER HAVE TAKEN PLACE. DETROITERS NEED TO LEARN HOW TO SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER. YOU JUST DON'T DO WHAT KEM DID. HEY! SOMEONE GAVE HIM AN OPPORTUNITY. YOU SHOULDN'T NEVER FORGET HOW YOU NEEDED SOMEONE TO HELP YOU ALONG THE WAY. ALWAYS REMEMBER, YOU NEVER KNOW WHO WILL BE THE NEXT PERSON ON TOP, WHEN YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY DOWN.

Well, first off, the two versions are in different keys. I'm not sure if the actual versions released are in different keys or if it's that it was how they were uploaded. I think the Rose version is better, but I checked on iTunes and the Michele version is what's selling. This is some business and it seems like Rose is whining on this. Woman is the only other vocalist on the album outside Jill Scott and she's upset because she's not on the single? It's called a hook up. She got one and wanted more. An opportunity wasted and the sad thing is that a great vocalist from Detroit took a pretty public route to gripe about another great vocalist from Detroit. Imagine if Kanye got loud about all the stuff he didn't get credit for writing for Jay-Z? Instead he took the money and positioned himself to win. This is pure business folks, so while yes, I do like Rose's version more, her public bickering is disappointing.
