'Black, Female and Wealth' forum examines state of Black wealth

NanaDansoa Paintsil's goal is to be an "advocate for wealth within underserved communities and wage equality for women of color."

Black women are more at risk of going into retirement broke and and unhealthy, a persistent problem with no solution in sight.

Much of the reason is due to decades of financial disparity -- Black women have historically been paid less than their peers forever -- and historical disenfranchisement. But another reason is a lack of financial education.

Radio host NanaDansoa Paintsil, who hosts the "Talking With Nana" show on WCHB, is looking to change that.

Paintsil established the State of Black Wealth project, where she hopes to "advocate for wealth within underserved communities and wage equality for women of color." The project's first forum, "Black, Female and Wealth," kicks off tonight with a panel of Black female financial experts, including Gail Perry-Mason, author of "Girl, Make Your Money Grow!"; Gabriella Barthlow of Alpha Advisory Group; Ebony Cochran of Blackwood Credit Services; and Jenni Lewis of Tax Team Services. Paintsil and Lauren Bealore, co-founder of Young, Ambitious and Beautiful, are the forum's organizers.

Tonight's forum is brought together by the State of Black Wealth Project in partnership with Young, Ambitious and Beautiful and Bamboo Detroit. The forum is held from 7 p.m.-9 p.m. on April 15 at Bamboo Detroit, 1442 Brush St. in Detroit and is free to attend.
