The MSU Science Festival Detroit Expo Day Comes to Belle Isle

This three-week long, statewide festival promises stimulating fun for the whole family.

For the sixth year, the MSU Science Festival is bringing STEM-related activities to East Lansing, Detroit and elsewhere in Michigan. The educational fun runs April 6-22, with Detroit Expo Day commencing on April 15 at Belle Isle. Festival coordinator Roxanne Truhn and Michigan State University Detroit Center director Jena Baker-Calloway expect upwards of 3,000 visitors to Belle Isle alone, with between 20,000 and 25,000 attendees expected statewide.

New this time around are the Tuskegee Airmen and their flight simulator, and Motor City Woman and Audio Engineers of Detroit will discuss the ins and outs of composing and editing music. And past favorites like Tiedyeology!, which unveils the chemical reactions and complexity of the tie-dying process, are also back.

"We really want people to see that it's not scary," says Truhn. "People used to think about science, math and all that – that, 'It's not for me. I'm not smart enough.' So, we want to create an environment where it's fun and engaging, and then they can really see themselves doing that type of work."
