Honoring Rosa Parks
The Henry Ford Museum remembers and celebrates civil rights activist, Rosa Parks, with a Day of Courage.
The Henry Ford Museum is paying homage to civil rights icon Rosa Parks with a daylong celebration in honor of her 100th birthday. The museum designated Feb. 4 the National Day of Courage, and admission to the museum is free on this day courtesy of the Target Corporation.
Parks, called the mother of the civil rights movement, is largely known for her arrest on Dec. 1, 1955 for violating segregation laws, when she refused to give up her seat to a white person on a Montgomery, Ala., city bus. Her courage ignited a revolution with the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a significant moment in the civil rights movement.
Her birthday celebration includes tribute activities, musical performances and dramatic presentations, which provide a chance to learn more about her long history of civil rights and struggle for justice.
Visitors also have the chance to sit on the Rosa Parks Bus, the place where Parks made her daring decision, and can partake in a special photo opportunity on this day.
Guest speakers include American civil rights leader Julian Bond, Rosa Parks biographers Douglas Brinkley, Jeanne Theoharis and Wayne State University assistant professor Danielle McGuire.
