Elevated Yogi Rolls Weed into Traditional Yoga for a Higher Experience

Puff puff pose.

Did you know cannabis, much like yoga, can lower stress and boost metabolism because of the psychoactive THC and non-psychoactive Cannabidiol compounds? This discovery is part of what inspired cannabis connoisseur and native Detroiter, Leonard Coklow, to open Elevated Yogi in 2016. "I was talking to a couple of different yoga instructors and they said they smoke anyway before yoga," Coklow says. "So we thought why not pair them together?"

Their beginnings were humble, hosting yoga sessions at various parks across Detroit. Years later, Elevated Yogi has its own studio inside the Cannabis Counsel law firm, hosting workshops like Sushi 101, Cooking with Cannabis, and of course, yoga sessions. Classes start at $15 each or you can pay $50 a month for unlimited yoga access. You can expect class to start with a BYOW – Bring Your Own Weed – session in the private kitchen and cafe, which are marijuana-designated areas. If you prefer not to medicate, you can lounge in the smoke-free yoga studio.

Coklow says classes are great for beginners, but they have modifications for all levels. "You'll get a better experience if you know more about (yoga), but even if you don't know anything about yoga and come to class, you'll have a good time."
