Hustle & Brunch Event Hosts Local Women Looking to Build 'Sisterships'

Pearls & Brown Girls' founder Shauntay Shipp wants to empower women and 'mend broken bonds.'

With Pearls & Brown Girls, Pontiac native Shauntay Shipp wanted to create four things: “sisterships,” inspiration, hope – and a way. In essence, her mission is to “mend broken bonds between women and their ability to support one another.” And, come July 14, the Texan is bringing that message home as her organization hosts a Hustle & Brunch event for women here in metro Detroit.

Bonding with her own “sisterhood” didn’t always come easy. As a kid, Shipp was bullied and experienced mean-girl culture firsthand. It took decades to move on, and finally she did – as an adult. In Dallas, her home since 2010, she’s thrived in careers from real estate agent to cake designer. In fact, her business, Thirsty Cupcake, became known for celeb cake orders, and Shipp scored a top prize on popular reality show Cake Hunters. Still, she had a bigger goal.

“I wanted to create a safe space where women could learn to connect, grow, uplift and empower one another,” says Shipp. And she did just that in December 2017. Part of her vision from the start, the Hustle & Brunch series was designed to visit different cities and benefit the community. Her upcoming local stop, titled Hustle & Brunch Detroit: How to Boss Up, is held at a private locale revealed to Eventbrite ticket buyers. “We will enjoy brunch and mimosas, mingle, listen to one of Detroit’s hottest DJs, shop local businesses and just build sisterships,” Shipp says.
