MoGo Introduces Street Skills Classes to Make Every Bicycler Feel Safe

The bike sharing service wants confident riders.

Four wheels might have defined the Motor City, but Detroit's slowly becoming a bicycling town – thanks in part to a thriving downtown and Midtown and bike sharing services like MoGo. The company boasts "430 bikes at 43 stations across 10 Detroit neighborhoods" on its website, plus affordable prices – starting at $8 daily.

A break in the weather means most people are seeking fun outdoor activities. Why not bicycling? Even Jefferson Avenue is getting prepped to be more "bike friendly," so MoGo's Street Skills classes should be useful for expert, novice and beginner alike, says Rory Lincoln, director of programming and operations.

"MoGo believes that anyone who wants to ride a bicycle should feel safe, comfortable and confident enough to do so," Lincoln says. Classes include Road Rules, Biking 101, Confident City Cycling and Winter Street Skills. The "101" offers something for everyone, while the "confidence" course reviews proper signaling, turning, lane and intersection positioning. At the end, says Lincoln, they put it all together with a few short rides followed by a group ride. Classes also are free – an added bonus. "Through this series of classes, we hope people feel safer and more empowered to ride a bicycle," he says.
