RockCity LookBook Creators Picture Detroit's Black Artist

Local culture creators Blair Watts and Bree Gant celebrate the African-American artist in the Motor City in showcase

It isn't for Coney dogs or Tigers. And actually, it has nothing to do with ruins. People are moving to Detroit for a new promise of progression.

But in this promise, there is an understated disparity of opportunity available to native Detroit artists. Some assume because there are grants for funding art programs, everyone is privy to the information. Unfortunately, because of the invisible walls of social scenes, only peanuts of information are trickled down from the "newer" residents of the city to the old.

This divide is how the "underground creative scenes" are born, and what inspired the birth of RockCity Lookbook.

RCL is a social collaborative that took root in the "old Detroit" and now blooms in the new. We represent a unique and special generation that understands the importance of connecting the social scenes together. As artists, we are unacknowledged pioneers that fuel the innovation and change within city lines.

Our mission is simple: to develop and support self-sustaining communities in Detroit, ignite and apply the idea of "creating your own reality," and to pave lanes for ourselves and other artists who have ever felt pushed to the margins.

RCL is our tool, using our personal passions of photography, styling and artistry to paint a picture and record history—understanding a large part of recording history is also to create it.

There are various mediums to reach those who will help to crystalize our mission, and this photography feature serves as a window into our vision as it's evolved in the past two years.

After all is said and done, we want to lead with our truth and the message that is synonymous with the city. With the beautiful and not so beautiful, Detroit is a cool place to be.
