Asaysia Plates to Share Opens Downtown and Serves 'Modern American Cuisine'

Black chef Larry Middlebrooks says his Maryland crab cakes will make you want to slap your mama.

Asaysia Plates to Share is the latest addition to the booming downtown restaurant scene. The 47th launch from owner and restauranteur Matt Palmer, Asaysia presents shareable offerings of "modern American cuisine," says chef Larry Middlebrooks, whose menu is a melding of his extensive travels, which include New York City and San Francisco.

Originally from Washington, D.C., Middlebrooks recommends his Maryland crab cakes, but whatever you choose, it'll be served up from an open-concept kitchen by a mostly-black – Middlebrooks included – culinary crew. Or you could grab a specialty cocktail from the bar and, for a few extra bucks, have it placed in a smoke chamber and infused with flavors like applewood and hickory.

From the antique hostess podium to the splashes of stainless steel, the whole place is a thoughtful marriage of vintage and modern yet feels very approachable and very Detroit – pumped and charged for what's next. Palmer wonders, "If they do other things in other big cities, why can't we bring that standard (here)?"
